“Art is the controlled justification of feeling.” It means that conveying to others the relevance of a feeling requires an act of premeditation and control. Feelings do just fine without control but capturing, interpreting and sharing a feeling in such a way that recipient is drawn to it requires knowing what you want and how to get it. This could be music, dance, sculpture, painting and photography.
While not an artist, I do apply this principle to my work. I look with an eye towards discovering beauty in the ordinary. The biggest attraction is exploring new places, experiencing new events, and meeting people. The camera allows me to discover places we’d normally pass by, and seek to find ways to share where the viewer feels they are there themselves. It’s challenging and a whole lot of fun. It makes waking up at 4 AM to be somewhere at sunrise such an attractive proposition. It’s about being in the moment to enjoy something wonderful, or be confronted by something less wonderful, and looking for ideal ways to capture it.
